Rep. Van Epps Commemorates the 25th Anniversary of September 11th  

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Matt Van Epps released a video reflecting on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, remembering the nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives that day and honoring the first responders, servicemembers, and their families who sacrificed in the years that followed.

Twenty-five years ago, our country changed forever. 

I was a freshman at West Point on September 11, 2001. I remember watching the towers fall in the classroom. 

In that moment, we knew America was under attack. 

And for those of us at West Point, that day changed the course of our lives. We knew we would graduate into a nation at war, and we began preparing for the fight ahead. 

My class became known as the “Class of 9/11.” We graduated in 2005, and many of us went on to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

I eventually joined the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, flying missions to hunt down high-value targets and terrorist leaders in search of justice for that September day. 

For many of us, serving was the honor of a lifetime. But the privilege of serving our country came with a heavy price, paid by servicemembers and their families.

Sadly, some of my classmates and thousands of servicemembers made the ultimate sacrifice in the war on terror.

Today, as we mark the 25th Anniversary of September 11th, we remember the nearly 3,000 Americans who were killed that day. 

We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and every American who ran toward danger and gave their lives trying to save their brothers and sisters. 

We remember the servicemembers who answered the call in the years that followed and didn’t come home. 

For my generation, September 11th was a defining moment. 

For new generations, it is becoming a date in history. 

That is why we have to keep telling the stories. 

We must never forget what happened, who we lost, and the sacrifices that were made in defense of our freedom.

Twenty-five years later, America’s resolve must remain steadfast. 

Now, more than ever, we must unite.

May we never forget September 11th.

May we never forget those we lost.

And may we always remember what it means to keep freedom alive.
